The Department of Microbiology was established in the year 2016 under the guidance of Dr Ruby Thomas, the Head of the Department. The department has one Professor, one associate Professor,three Assistant Professors and four Tutors .The department undertakes academic and diagnostic activities. Academic programs following RGHUS syllabus are conducted for MBBS and other allied health science courses .
A state of the art Diagnostic Laboratory providing services in Bacteriology, Virology, Mycology, Mycobacteriology, Parasitology and Immunology has been set up in the hospital.
The RNTCP laboratory was launched by the department in the month of August 2018 and the RNTCP core committee was formed on 15/10/2018. Sensitization programs for students, nurses and doctors were conducted.
Hospital infection control committee meetings are conducted on a regular basis by the department. Infection control classes is being delivered to nursing and housekeeping staff on topics such as the importance of sterilization and disinfection, hand hygiene, biomedical waste management, and needle stick injuries.
With the recent outbreak of COVID 19, the RT PCR molecular diagnostic laboratory was established in September 2020, after being accredited by NABL and also fulfilling the proficiency test which was evaluated by the department of Virology at NIMHANS. The laboratory has been catering to both rural as well as urban Bengaluru .
