The world of Anaesthesia is free of pain, or we can say that with the advent of anaesthesia mankind has conquered pain. This is a specialty which deals with loss of sensation and muscle paralysis as required with or without loss of consciousness by the administration of drug through various routes, while the surgical procedure is taking place. The department of anaesthesiology provides complete preoperative care encompassing pre-operative evaluation, risk assessment, intra operative management, post-operative care with pain relief including critical care. Core anaesthesiology is extending its wings from its basic surgical care to outpatient based preanaesthetic clinics, operation theatre anesthesia care, post- operative care unit, pain clinics, and also intensive care units with ventilatory support.
At the Pain clinic services, not only immediate acute post-operative pain relief is taken care of but partial or complete pain relief for chronic pain patients is also dealt with. The department is inseparable part of obstetric care for relieving labour pain and anaesthesia for all gynaecological procedures. The department takes responsibility as trauma team leaders and also be in the forefront assuming social responsibility at the time of management of disasters and pandemics.
UG medical students are taught to understand the importance
of anaesthesiology, critical care and pain relief in patient
management. Skills such as CPR, BLS and ACLS, setting up of
intravenous transfusion, maintenance of clear airway,
performing endotracheal intubation, administration of
oxygen, ICU care are demonstrated and taught. Extensive
training in Skill lab is part of teaching.
Courses offered UG - MBBS – phase III-part-I - 150

Transforming a raw MBBS graduate into a confident skilled anesthesiologist forms the basis of PG teaching. The primary goal is to train them to practice anaesthesia and related care independently and successfully. The art and science of anaesthesiology is taught to achieve knowledge (Cognitive domain), skill (Psychomotor domain), proper attitude, communication skills, humane values and ethical practice. The department stresses on these values while training.
The Department of Anaesthesiology, with highly qualified and vastly experienced faculty is fully geared to train young doctors in the subject specialty .The training is multi-dimensional. Significance of academic learning, orientation towards research is included in training. By the end of training, they are made to be confident in their approach to manage patients requiring anesthesia services inside the operating room and also related management outside of the OT environment. Inculcation of social responsibility and humane approach towards patients forms the basis at all stages of training.
PAC clinic checkup is to ensure that the patients overall condition and physiological parameters are at their best in order to withstand the stress and strain of anaesthesia and surgery and to minimize the overall risk.
Providing variety of options to minimize, manage and control pain as well as comprehensive pain management in chronically ill patients to improve quality of life.
Skills needed to confidently secure and manage difficult airway is basic in any critical situation. Use of special equipment to achieve the same is taught on mannequins and in real life situations.
